How It Works

  1. 1Enter the asset's purchase value, purchase date, and current value. Both values must use the selected currency.
  2. 2The calculator retrieves continuous COMEX gold-futures closes (GC=F) for the same period and converts them to your selected currency.
  3. 3It shows the value gold would have reached at the latest available close, your nominal return, and the asset's relative result versus gold.
  4. 4Add past appraisals or valuations to compare the two over time rather than only at the purchase date and today.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 'versus gold' mean?
The calculator first works out how many ounces of gold your purchase value could have bought on the purchase date. It then values those ounces using the latest available gold-futures close. Your asset value is compared with that gold-equivalent value.
Can I use this for real estate?
Yes. Enter the price you paid and a conservative current appraisal or estimated sale value. Add historic appraisals if you have them to make the comparison timeline more useful.
Does this include rent, dividends, taxes, or transaction costs?
No. It compares the two values you enter. For a more complete investment return, use a net current value that reflects income, ownership costs, fees, taxes, and other cash flows you want included—or keep a separate cash-flow analysis.
Is GC=F the same as gold spot price?
No. GC=F is Yahoo Finance's continuous COMEX gold-futures symbol. It is a practical, liquid market reference, but futures and physical spot prices can differ because of contract timing, funding, storage, and market conditions.
